Be Quiet When, in Their Majesty, Southern Pines Would Like to Speak

As if some palm unseen,

ever pressed from the sky,

made those tallest pines

meet one ordained height

which the scaly boughs

could not pass

so they gnarl and bow

as they twine and wind

the scorching sun,

and yet so even—

and thus they graze and rub

and scent egret plumes and wings

that bring them regal white

with silence braided into breeze.
